All About Solar Panels

With the advent of green energy, people have started to show interest in alternative power sources because they are more affordable and they are more efficient with regards to the production of power. Providing clean energy is the foremost goal of Solenergy and the technology involved in the production and distribution of price and efficiency involve “Solar Panels”.

What are Solar Panels?

Solar panels (or PV panels) are items that covert electricity from light. As its name implies, its main source of energy comes from the Sun. The name “Solar” is derived from the Spanish word “Sol” which literally meant “Sun”.  For a more scientific take on the subject,  it can also be referred to as “photovoltaics”, which means “Light electricity”.

Photovoltaics, on the other hand, is defined as the method of transforming the energy harvested from the sun into direct current electricity using solar panels or other materials that demonstrate the photovoltaic phenomena.

Panels are made from silicon, the purity of which defines the panel’s efficiency when it comes to conversion. They have a direct correlation – the purer the silicon, the more efficient the panel is. However, it’s important to note that purer panels cost more, so finding the right balance between these three characteristics is crucial to getting the best solar panel for you.

More on Solar Panels

There are three types of solar panels, and most of their differences lie in their pricing, the materials they’re made from, and how efficient they are in converting sunlight into usable energy.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

In these panels is monocrystalline silicon, which is known for being very pure. The cells in it are made of silicone blocks with a cylindrical shape, while the panel itself is tapered on its sides to increase its effectiveness while lowering its production expense. As such, these types of panels can get quite expensive, but one can argue that it’s worth the heftier price tag due to its increased efficiency. It’s perfect for those who are looking to convert to integrating solar energy into their living or working spaces without having to worry about the space the panels might eat up. The pros may outweigh the cons in this one: while the pricing is greater, the electricity you get out of each and every panel is too.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Also known as multi-silicon or ribbon panels, polycrystalline panels are like the middle ground of solar panel types. As opposed to the aforementioned monocrystalline varieties, this kind is less efficient, but also less expensive. It contains less silicon, and as a consequence of that you’ll need to install more to meet your needs. Because it’s the balance between all kinds, it’s the most often used type because of its equality when it comes to price and efficiency.

Thin Film Solar Panels

The thin film variety is the easiest to produce as it’s made of thin, light, and adequately photovoltaic material. Thus, these cost much less, but will require more space and more panels. This makes thin film impractical for those who are in constrained spaces such as residential or limited commercial areas. But, for those looking to convert to solar energy (in the Philippines especially), it’s a very viable option. Thin Film solar panels perform better when under hotter temperatures – this is its main advantage over the monocrystalline and polycrystalline varieties. It’s also considered to be more aesthetically pleasing.

Which panel is best for you?

Choose your panel according to your budget, the power you consume, and how much space you’ve got to spare. So long as you can find a proper balance between all three, installing solar panels should be no problem. Providers such as Solenergy are readily equipped to assist with both installation and maintenance and thus ensures an easy transition.

  1. Hi, we don’t sell by the panel since we’re an EPC provider – we do the whole PV system. If you want, we can refer you to a supplier who can provide panels for you. We’ll send you an email. Thank you!
